Fire leaves Cool Springs family homeless
02/21/2009
Stateville, NC - A fire in the Cool Springs area left a family of four without a home late Thursday night.

Cool Springs Fire Department Chief Andy Webster said firefighters answered the call around midnight, and arrived at 110 Redwood Lane to find the one-story home engulfed. The home is located in the Cedar Hills Development off Bell Farm Road.

Kim and Trevor Dwyer and their two children lived in the home.

Dwyer said she and her children were in bed when she heard the smoke detector sound. She said she went into the hallway and saw thick black smoke and a red glow from the living room area.
Dwyer and her two children climbed through a window to escape the house.

A neighbor, Bobby Quinton, said he walked out of his house and saw smoke. He said he heard his neighbor beating on the window screen trying to get out of the house. Quinton ran over and helped Dwyer and the two children escape. He also called 911 to report the fire.

Cool Springs units, backed up by Wayside and Ebenezer fire departments, arrived on the scene within five minutes, Webster said.

The home was a total loss, and the cause of the fire is under investigation by Iredell County Assistant Fire Marshal David Souther.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the Dwyers.

Webster said this fire is a reminder of the importance of working smoke detectors.

"Without a working smoke detector in this home, three lives could have been lost, turning what was already a terrible loss of property for this family into a terrible loss of life," Webster said.

In addition to the three fire departments, the Iredell County Rescue Squad, the Mobile Air Unit and Iredell EMS responded to the scene, and Statesville, County Line and Trinity fire departments provided standby services for the departments on the scene.
