Fire chief: Smoke detector kept fire small
05/23/2009
Gastonia, NC - Three fire departments responded to a fire on Moore Lane in Gastonia Saturday night, but it only took a fire extinguisher to put it out.

The fire started in an upstairs bathroom, said New Hope Fire Department Assistant Chief Matt Young.

The fire caused less than $500 worth of damage, he said.

The homeowner was at home when the smoke alarm went off. She smelled smoke, called 911 and got out.

It was the early detection of a smoke alarm that kept the home from being damaged, Young said.

"Right now the fire is still under investigation," Young said.

The fire department will likely turn the investigation over to the Gaston County Fire Marshal, he said. The fire is not suspicious, he said.

The family won't have to sleep somewhere else. The power that was turned off as a precaution was turned back on later Saturday night.
